Louisville’s digital media scene has just added a new player: SalaryScout. The company is the brainchild of Ben Thomas, an IT security specialist and moonlighting entrepreneur. Locally Ben is known as the organizer of periodic “Louisville Geek Dinners” and has had a few side projects up his sleeves for a while so it’s nice to see SalaryScout launch.
The company asks new users to answer a series of questions about their job compensation and responsibilities, and delivers in return full access to the anonymous data of other users. Unlike competitors Salary.com (which recently filed to go public as Ed Sim nicely covers) and PayScale (amongst others), SalaryScout has a social component, allowing users to comment on each other’s profiles. If Ben can attract a large userbase, there are a variety of revenue-generating options available (ads, premium services, job postings, etc). The company received launch coverage on TechCrunch which should give a nice out-of-the-gates push. I’d add to Marshall Kirkpatrick’s review of the service that Ben has done a terrific job of handling the international component - countries and currencies are well incorporated.
It’s also worth noting Ben’s great attitude; I think he speaks for many scrappy entrepreneurs with these words on the company’s blog:
…I’m just a regular guy with a lot of ideas. Ideas are the easy part, the difficulty lies in execution. Although I have many other projects brewing, SalaryScout is something that I thought I could accomplish in a short period of time. In other words, I just went for it.
I’m thrilled you did, Ben. Good luck!
