Andy Sack, CEO of Judy’s Book, has begun discussing his company’s strategic development process in a series of posts worth reading for any entrepreneur, most especially those addressing “local.” He describes a management meeting in which the group asked itself:
- What are the hardest problems in our current business approach - the market issues that we keep struggling with over and over?
- What’s (surprisingly) easy about our business – the things that are working better than expected?
- Where’s the parade? What major trends are we trying to get in front of with our business?
These are great questions for any company to be asking itself, but it also got me thinking about introspection in general so I left a comment, noting that Andy’s company-specific questions had personal equivalents that are all too often ignored, especially by those early in their career (or life) journey:
- What am I struggling with/finding as roadblocks to personal growth?
- What am I good at/love doing/find easy?
- What do I value/where should I be aiming my strengths?
My father was a Jesuit seminarian for 12 years, during which time he spent long hours focused on “self-reflection” (thank goodness for me he was never ordained). While daily practice may be overboard, he thought, if only we each gave ourselves time once a month, we’d be better for it. Few do. And thank goodness for me he did spend 12 years in the seminary - he taught me the value of a strong education.
